If you need in-person assistance with a property tax, voter registration, automobile registration, as well as veteran-specific issues, please join the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar and staff on Wednesday, Jan. 20, for the second of four town hall meetings to help residents get the services they need more easily.
The meeting will be from 7-9 p.m. at Grayson/Baldree Community Center, 13828 Corpus Christi in the Cloverleaf area in Precinct 2, Commissioner Sylvia Garcia’s precinct.
“Most of the adult residents of Harris County deal with my office every year,” said Leo Vasquez, the Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar. “We collect property taxes, handle vehicle registrations and license plates and register voters.
“We want to get out into the communities and tell our customers about our services that are available via mail, telephone and the Internet or even at about 200 grocery stores. We’ve stressed ‘Get online, not in line’ for years. However, too many people still choose to come to our 16 locations when they could conduct their business more conveniently.”
At each meeting, Vasquez will describe the operations of the office. Then he and members of the office’s Community Outreach team will answer questions and help residents solve some problems. Most of the necessary forms will be available. Help will be available in English and in Spanish.
Team members will be prepared to answer questions about:
- Property tax exemptions
- Homestead
- Over-65 homestead
- Disabled homeowner
- Disabled veteran exemptions (including one that took effect Sept. 1, 2009)
- Active duty military personnel tax deferral and waiver
- How to pay property tax bills online or via telephone using a credit card or e-checks.
- Information on registering and/or selling vehicles
- Disabled parking placards or plates
- Disabled veterans’ plates or placards
- Information on applying for refund of motor vehicle tax on vehicles modified for the orthopedically handicapped
- Voter registration information, including
- Volunteer Deputy Voter Registrar applications
- Voter application forms
- Deadlines
- How to determine your voting precinct
Vasquez and team members will explain which Tax Office services are available via mail, telephone and the Internet or by using about 200 grocery stores and the office’s 16 branches.
Other town halls, all following the same general format, will be held:
Jan. 27, 7-9 p.m. in the May Community Center, 2100 Wolf Road, Huffman in Precinct 4, Commissioner Jerry Eversole’s precinct.
Feb. 3, 7-9 p.m., in the Bayland Park Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet St., Houston in Precinct 3, Commissioner Steve Radack’s precinct.
The first town hall meeting was held Jan. 13 in the courtroom of Justice of the Peace Jo Ann Delgado at the Harris County Courthouse Annex, 10851 Scarsdale Blvd., in Precinct One, Commissioner El Franco Lee’s precinct.
