Those of you that do not think John Faulk has a chance in his quest to remove Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee's stranglehold on Congressional District 18 need to visit with him and his team. You will have a couple of chances in the next week, starting with a protest tomorrow near MacGregor Park.
Seriously, you need to visit with him. I freely admit that when I first met John, I wasn't impressed - and he'll probably say the same about me! But over the last year, as I've watched his campaign grow and become very, very professional, I've had to admit that I was wrong about that first impression. For one thing, the guy has boundless energy. For another, he has assembled a very proficient, effective professional staff. And lastly, his volunteer organization is very well structured, disciplined, and enthused about their candidate.
The protest tomorrow will be held near the site of what local residents are calling a "disaster" but really is just another example of Metro's arrogance. They decided to send contractors in to cut down decades old trees - if you've been to this area, you know exactly what I'm referring to. If not, you should go, it is a beautiful area of Houston. Yet Metro prefers to level everything in its path. If you make it to the protest, you'll see the grassroots side of Mr. Faulk.
Your second chance to meet him will be Wednesday evening, 4/7 at his official campaign kickoff. His staff is probably groaning that I would mention this as they are already concerned about the crowd being too large! That is a great "problem" to have, don't you think? If you can't make it to one of those, how about logging on to his website and shooting a few bucks his direction? He has a legitimate shot at knocking SJL off - the demographics of that district have shifted since the 2000 Census and there has been a lot of gentrification in the area. Sure, you can go along with the "top dogs" in the Republican Party that think the district should be handed to SJL on a silver platter but if you have a mind of your own, 25, 50, 100 bucks will go a long way to helping John's chances.
