jimb, glad the turkey went well! Different birds cook at different rates, I guess. Was it a fresh turkey or a frozen one with a 15% solution? The solution is much like a brine and will make the turkey cook faster.

Kiddo was at her dad's for dinner, but returned home in the evening, so off to Luby's. There's a new one out here in Cypress and it's lovely inside. Yesterday, up at 3 to hit the stores at 4. When the alarm went off, I suggested we just sleep in, but Kiddo reminded me of the tradition, and our wants list, so off we went. We had such fun. We were able to get the gifts we needed in record time and at huge savings, so home for a nap. After the nap, we went out again to finish up, and get the wrapping paper and lots of scotch tape. We started with the outside of the house, and put out the candy canes and yard ornaments. Then the tree.... kiddo, the angel she is, carried in all the totes of decorations. We decorated till 10:30 p.m.! My dear neighbor across the street was alone this weekend, as her family went to their lake house. She has a dear childhood girlfriend in the last stages of pancreatic cancer, and felt she needed to be here......just in case. We invited her over to share some pizza with us, and watch as we destroyed the house, then put it back together again. We laughed, and talked, and talked about the childhood ornaments kiddo made all through grade school, etc. The tree isn't perfect, it's not a polished tree, but a tree of memories. Kiddo wrapped gifts as I finished the tree. She wanted to get a lot done before heading back to school Sunday. Sophie the nosey and demanding, dachshund got whacked with the wooden spoon twice, because she wouldn't let kiddo wrap...... and then Sophie pouted on the sofa till bedtime ! ( at least she was out of our hair). Max the newest of the clan, and a shitzu.. was good as always. Buddy the cat, came in, found a rug and went to sleep.

By the way, I tried your suggestions on the fried turkey. It went quite well. I think I could have managed the temperature a bit better (maybe 25 degrees lower on average) because the bird cooked more quickly than advertised and was, as a result, the slightest bit overcooked, but it still turned out pretty dang good. The whole thing's been eaten already.
